Character Award

Garden Road Elementary talks about character. They have 6 pillars of character (Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Fairness, Trustworthiness, and Good Citizenship). The kids know them and talk about them daily. I love this. In a public school I would have never expected it, but nothing delights me more than this.

Each month the teacher picks one boy and one girl from their class to be recognized for having good character. Not every child in the class gets chosen, this is a real award with real merit. In Mrs. Pon’s class she does it by nominating three candidates, and then she lets the kids vote from those three. I love this because that means that the child chosen is not only recognized by their teacher as someone who has good character, but also by their classmates.

In January Dayla was chosen for her class:

They go up in front of the whole school to receive a certificate and be recognized.

We couldn’t be more proud.
